Obama turning 50 with focus on health, while president’s father revealed
While a new book may shed some light on the background of another “Barack,” the father of President Obama, there’s thoughts about his own health as the president. What Obama also shares in a recent AARP interview is how the big “50” will be celebrated by his wife and kids. At the same time, it’s interesting that shortly after the president met with AARP officials for this interview – that was hyped by AARP as the president becoming a “Baby Boomer” – the CEO of AARP responded to Obama’s deficit reduction proposal by approving the president’s plan to make needed changes to Social Security. AARP is a hugely powerful nonprofit organization with a massive membership in the tens of millions that aims to help people over age 50 with their lives.
“The Other Barack: The Bold and Reckless Life of President Obama’s Father” is slated for release on Tuesday, July 12 by Public Affairs Press. In it, Boston Globe reporter Sally H. Jacobs takes a candid look at Barack Obama Sr. and paints a portrait in sharp contrast to the one provided by the president in his own memoir, ‘Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance,’ published in 2004,” reported NBC News “Today” TV show July 7.
Meanwhile, those who think the president is keeping secrets – such as Donald Trump and some Tea Party members – the book about the president’s father has sparked new calls by Tea Party members here in Eugene and in other parts of the nation to ask for a full investigation into the birth place of Obama even while the president has offered proof that he was in fact born in the U.S., per Hawaii was part of the 50 states when he was born there.
At the same time, the new book about “the other Obama” touts like investigations to disprove other claims made by President Obama, but this time about his father.
“Through exhaustive interviews, Jacobs assembles a complex depiction of the elder Obama as a brilliant but troubled man. One of the most notable revelations she offers is that when Barack Obama Sr. was a 24-year-old college sophomore, he and Ann Dunham — his second wife and the mother of President Obama — initially planned to give their unborn child up for adoption via the Salvation Army,” stated the July 6 NBC Today Show report.
Also, what’s known from the president’s book about his late father is that Obama Senior’s life was a tragedy with drinking, poverty and even losing both legs in an auto crash. Obama Senior fathered another son named George. Just six months after his son’s birth, Obama Senior died after another car crash that took place in Nairobi in 1982.
During a recent AARP interview, President Obama said the “worst thing” about turning the big “50” Aug. 4 is “I don’t feel I’m as fast as I used to be. And I heal up slower on the basketball court. Also, I’m old enough where hopefully I’ve made enough mistakes I’m not going to repeat. And I’m still young enough that I can appreciate that wisdom.”
The president was then asked how he would spend his 50th. “Last year, on my 49th, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and all these other All-Star players came and played a pickup game with a bunch of my friends and me. Had a wonderful time. It’ll be hard to top that. But I suspect the girls may have something planned.”
“When my grandparents were in their 50s, they were already ‘older.’ They drank, they smoked, they didn’t exercise, they ate all kinds of stuff. And so they were already slowing down pretty good. Now I have friends who are 65 and 70 who are in better shape than my grandparents were when I was a kid. Americans want to be judged by their capacities, their interests, their curiosity, their imaginations, and not just by a number. I do want to make sure that when Malia and Sasha are entering their 50s, we still have the security of Social Security. Of Medicare,” added Obama during the AARP interview.
Also, when asked what the president wants for his 50th birthday in August. Obama said: “A much lower unemployment rate. And lower gas prices (laughs). Those would be perfect gifts for my birthday.”
