Foot Care for Diabetics

For diabetics, taking care of the feet is immensely important. Complications from diabetes will greatly affect the feet due to reduced blood circulation and vunerability to infection. Here are some foot care tips for diabetics.

Make it your routine to inspect your feet everyday. See if there are any skin discolorations, blisters, corns, calluses or any other signs of infections. Dryness, cracking and athletes foot is also likely to occur. The earlier you catch these infections, the easier it can be for you to treat it.

Always wear the most comfortable feet wear possible. Opt for sandals instead of tight, closed shoes if possible. Wear cotton or wool socks or stockings instead of garters and other constricting leg wear.

When washing your feet, use lukewarm water and mild soap. Avoid soaking them longer than 10 minutes. Clean thoroughly including the the area inbetween your toes as always and pat your feet with a soft towel to dry.

Do not use knifes, razors or nail cutters to remove corns or calluses. Rub them off with a fine emery board or a pumice stone. Check afterwards if redness or discoloration occur or if there are other signs of infection.

Massage your feet gently for better blood circulation on your feet. Use oil or moisturizing lotion to prevent skin dryness.

Do not end your routine check-up with your endocrinologist without a feet inspection. This can also gauge how your diabetes is progressing.
