How to Deal with Itchy Skin

Itchiness can really bring unpleasant sensation and discomfort to anyone. What’s worse is that when you keep on giving in to the urge to scratch the itch, chances are, you might inflict more harm to your skin. It can lead to more rashes or even open up a wound which can lead to an infection. Although the root cause of different itch varies, you can still try these all-purpose tips to alleviate that itchy feeling.
When an itch is too unbearable to deal with, try a cold shower. The cold water can numb your skin making you feel less itchy and cool all over. You can also try a soothing bath. Add a cup of salt to your bath water and soak in the tub for a few minutes. Another alternatve is to place a cup of oatmeal in a cheesecloth, tie it and dip it on the bath water until it becomes milky.
Grab a tube of calamine lotion for instant relief from the itch. Make sure that the calamine lotion does not have any traces of antimistamine since this can cause allergic reactions to your skin. You can also apply nonprescription hydrocortisone cream and pramoxine. However, do not apply these if you have an infection.
Be wary of the different fabrics that you wear. Sometimes, the material in our cothes can aggravate or alleviate an unexpected itch. Some people do not react well to wool, dyes and synthetic cloths. White cotton clothes is always the best option to wear when you can’t stand the itchy feeling.
Your diet can also contribute to itchiness. If you are prone to itchy skin, limit your intake of coffee, alcohol and hot and spicy foods. These can cause swelling to the blood vessels and the skind’s outer later which can trigger itching.
