South Africa Gets to Grips with AIDS

It was a Wednesday in late October. Fifteen or so children were lining up outside the HIV clinic in Site B, Khayelitsha, Cape Towns largest township. Accompanied by their parents or, for orphans, an adult relative, they patiently waited their turn. The nurse weighed them, checked for coughing and handed out a months supply of anti-retroviral medicines (ARVs).

Some of the children were 8 to 10, others a bit older. Adolescence was just round the corner, rebellious and prone to risky behaviour, a period of difficult existential questions and emotional rollercoasters. Doctors not addressing concerns of older men, study finds

 

MONTREAL — Family doctors across Canada are out of sync with the medical concerns of middle-aged and older men — a problem that could be undermining their health, suggests a new national survey.

Although many general practitioners address the persistent issue of medication side effects, they often gloss over other pressing concerns such as memory loss and mobility impairment, according to the survey.

“There’s definitely a gap between what men expressed as being of most concern to them and the response they perceived to be getting from health-care providers,” said Dr. Cara Tanne

Study Finds Doctors Not Always Honest With Patients

Trust your doctor? A survey finds that some doctors arent always completely honest with their patients.

More than half admitted describing someones prognosis in a way they knew was too rosy. Nearly 20 percent said they hadnt fully disclosed a medical mistake for fear of being sued. And 1 in 10 of those surveyed said theyd told a patient something that wasnt true in the past year.

The survey, by Massachusetts researchers and published in this months Health Affairs, doesnt explain why, or what wasnt true.

I dont think that physicians set out to be dishonest, said lead researcher Dr. Lisa Iezzoni, a Harvard Medical School professor and director of Massachusetts General Hospitals Mongan Institute for Health Policy.

the newbie: Burp Tips!

You guys have helped me tackle lots of issues on this blog, from nursing to napping—from bathtime to travel tips.

Today, I’ve got a question that seems small, but is actually turning out to be a daily wonder for me: How the heck do you burp a baby?

I’ve seen tricks where you sway her from side to side and the sit her down and pat her back; I’ve tried the over-the-shoulder technique. And these work—mostly. June often spits up with her burps, so we have little cloths all over the house and I have very few shirts without milk stains on them (can I get a witness here?).
